ARC Says Value of U.S. Air Tickets Booked by Agents is Up 6.57 Percent

 The value of airline tickets booked by travel agents in the first quarter is 6.57 percent ahead of last year, according to ARC, and 18 percent over the value of tickets sold in 2010. January through March 2012 ticket sales totaled $23.3 billion, compared to $21.9 billion in 2011, and $19.8 billion in 2010. The number of transactions is up 1 percent; that means most of the increase reflects higher fares. Sales were out of 13,914 retail locations, down from 13,992 in February.

For the month of March, total sales dipped 0.12 percent to $8.3 billion year-over-year. They were $23.3 billion year-to -date, a 6.57 percent increase over the same period a year earlier. Domestic fares were down slightly, 1 percent to $3.5 million in March 2012 over March 2011, but were up 5.69 percent to $9.9 million year-to-date over the same period in 2011. Another indicator of the increase in the cost of airline tickets was the fact that the number of domestic transactions was down 5.54 percent to 9.3 million in March. Year-to-date domestic transactions were down 0.26 percent to 27.6 million.

International fares, however, were down 6.72 percent to $3.2 billion in March, but down just 0.37 percent to $8.9 billion year-to-date. International transactions were down 3.63 percent to 4 million in March and down 2.78 percent year-to-date to 11.6 million.Total fares were down 3.85 percent to $6.7 billion in March, but were up 2.74 percent year to date to $18.8 billion.
